Why don’t we move from South Louisiana?  It is the one place in the world where land loss is highest.  Why is it worth saving?  Can we save it? South Louisiana is a region where “good” and “evil” appear to reconcile.  It is difficult to make people that aren’t from here understand why we persist in living in such a dynamic, unpredictable and tragic environment.  Louisiana is alive and provides its people the fullest expression and range of what it is to be human… from the greatest and richest joys to the darkest painful losses.   That is why we stay.

Delaina LeBlanc is the Migratory Birds Coordinator for the Barataria-Terrebonne National Estuary Program.  She has been a bird researcher on Louisiana’s coast since 2007.
